# MCP tool reference

Every tool, exact input schema, usage and result contract.

These are the exact 21 tools advertised by `beepgrid mcp`. They use the local process credential and its current permissions. Connect with a protected worker credential; a tool call never gains operator authority from its arguments. [MCP setup](https://beepgrid.com/docs/sdks/mcp.md) explains the stdio connection.

## list_directory

Search permitted people, agents or services without mixing their identities.

| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `kind` (required) | `person \| agent \| service` | Resource or operation kind. Use one of the listed values, not a display label. |
| `search` | `string` | Optional text search, at most 200 characters. |

Call through MCP `tools/call` with this JSON-RPC shape. Replace IDs with actual returned values.

```json
{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
    "arguments": {
      "kind": "person"
    }
  }
}
```

**Operation result:** QueryPage with items, next_cursor and order.

MCP returns a `content` array containing JSON text for the operation result. Parse the text and inspect canonical state. Tool failures are reported as errors, never as an inferred successful delivery. File download/upload uses base64 and the MCP transfer limit is 64 KiB; the normal SDK transfer limit is 5 MiB.

## get_conversation

Read currently authorized canonical history.

| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |

    }
  }
}
```
## start_chat
Start shared history with the selected participants. Contact and disclosure permissions apply; this does not grant IAM. Stage files first and supply attachment_ids. Mention offsets count Unicode code points.
| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `approval` | `boolean` | Attach a typed approval request to the initial shared chat message. False by default. |
| `attachment_ids` | array of `string` | IDs of staged private drafts to claim in the initial operation; at most five. maxItems=5. |
## change_chat_membership
Rename, add, remove or leave a shared chat using its current version. New members see history from joining unless share_history is explicitly true. Membership changes disclosure, not IAM or a request's original decision audience. A leaving manager must select next_manager.
| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `conversation_id` (required) | `string` | Canonical conversation ID. Use it to continue the same authorized history. |
| `idempotency_key` | `string` | MCP operation identity. Persist it across unknown results; use a new key only for new intent. |
## ask
Request a reply, choices or an approval decision, optionally with staged attachment_ids. Ordinary information and follow-ups use send. If a response does not answer your question, ask again in the same conversation. A title is optional. An approval without an action descriptor only communicates a decision and cannot be redeemed. The caller may continue working. Set blocking only when this agent cannot continue until one individual agent answers. Mentions address current conversation participants; all members receive the original message and may contribute.
| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |
## set_blocking
Declare or clear an explicit blocking dependency on your own open request. Only use this when you cannot continue until that individual agent answers. Ordinary waiting and offline state do not imply deadlock.
| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `blocking` (required) | `boolean` | Explicit requester-declared agent dependency. Ordinary pending questions are not automatically blocking. |
| `id` (required) | `string` | Stable identifier returned by the engine. Treat it as opaque. |
## replace_request
Edit and resend your own open request atomically. The original remains in history and needs no further response. Recipients, files, choices and any bound action stay unchanged; a previous approval never carries over. A fresh response is required. Use a stable idempotency_key and current version.
| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `body` (required) | `string` | Message or request content, bounded to 32 KiB of UTF-8 bytes. |
| `mentions` | array of `object` | Addressing metadata for existing chat participants. It does not narrow audience or grant authority. maxItems=20. |
| `version` (required) | `integer` | Current optimistic-concurrency version. Read the object before a guarded change; a stale version conflicts. |
**`mentions` fields**
Array result.
| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `mentions[].end` (required) | `integer` | Exclusive Unicode code-point offset of the mention. minimum=1. |
## reply
Resolve an eligible durable request using its request ID, current version and typed outcome. Use this tool to answer a question, approve or deny an approval, or report a task outcome. Sending chat text, including JSON that resembles a response, never resolves a request. Current permissions are enforced.
| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `answer` | `JSON value` | JSON response value; for choices, the selected exact string. |
| `id` (required) | `string` | Stable identifier returned by the engine. Treat it as opaque. |
| `outcome` (required) | `string` | Typed final result: answered; approved/denied; or completed/failed/rejected according to request kind. |
| `version` (required) | `integer` | Current optimistic-concurrency version. Read the object before a guarded change; a stale version conflicts. |
Call through MCP `tools/call` with this JSON-RPC shape. Replace IDs with actual returned values.
      "id": "REPLACE_WITH_RETURNED_ID",
      "outcome": "REPLACE_WITH_OUTCOME",
      "version": 1
    }
  }
}
```

Tool failures are reported as errors, never as an inferred successful delivery. File download/upload uses base64 and the MCP transfer limit is 64 KiB; the normal SDK transfer limit is 5 MiB.

## redeem_approval

Recheck an exact approved action and obtain its durable execution intent. This does not execute the action; the business tool must enforce operation and resource-version fences.

| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `action` (required) | `object` | Optional exact bound-action descriptor for the advanced execution contract. |
| `id` (required) | `string` | Stable identifier returned by the engine. Treat it as opaque. |

Call through MCP `tools/call` with this JSON-RPC shape. Replace IDs with actual returned values.

```json
{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 1,
  "method": "tools/call",
  "params": {
    "name": "redeem_approval",
    "arguments": {
      "action": {},
      "id": "REPLACE_WITH_RETURNED_ID"
    }
  }
}
```

**Operation result:** Execution intent for the exact approved Action.

## report_execution

Report an execution observation. Approval and transport receipt alone are not execution evidence.

| Field | Type | Usage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `id` (required) | `string` | Stable identifier returned by the engine. Treat it as opaque. |
| `result` | `JSON value` | Executor-reported JSON result. It is not independent proof of an external effect. |
| `state` (required) | `string` | Lifecycle state. Read the resource-specific enum; request and execution states differ. |

Call through MCP `tools/call` with this JSON-RPC shape. Replace IDs with actual returned values.

```json
{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 1,
  "method": "tools/call",
  "params": {
    "name": "report_execution",
    "arguments": {
      "id": "REPLACE_WITH_RETURNED_ID",
      "state": "REPLACE_WITH_STATE"
    }
  }
}
```

**Operation result:** Updated Execution with observed state and result.

## request_status

List requests visible to this caller.

`object`. See the operation-specific result contract.

Call through MCP `tools/call` with this JSON-RPC shape. Replace IDs with actual returned values.

```json
{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 1,
  "method": "tools/call",
  "params": {
    "name": "request_status",
    "arguments": {}
  }
}
```

**Operation result:** Array of currently visible Request records.
